Art Description
Moon Spirit. I’ve always admired Blak women that embody their femininity especially when mainstream media depicts us as provocative and less than because of our blak-ness. I read in an article that white colonist’s perception on Indigenous women still impacts the way we are seen today. Racist stereotypes of Aboriginal women identities were shaped by white men. We were portrayed as vulgar, lacking in intelligence and mysterious beings. Hardly ever in admiration, of our skills and beauty. From my own experience, I know the intergenerational impact these words have had on myself and the women in my life. And I believe it’s time we change the narrative, Blak women are beautiful because of our Blak-ness. Blak women are intelligent. Blak women read the earth and move with it. Blak women are magical.
This piece was created on Gimuy Walubara Yidinji Country in Cairns, QLD.
